Mini Golf, Minigolf or Miniature Golf, Adventure Golf, Crazy Golf and Putt Putt:  these are some of the names for a sport that is now hugely popular in countries around the world and even has its own international sports organisation, the World Minigolf Sport Federation (WMF).  The WMF organises world minigolf championships bi-annually, counterbalanced by Continental championships in Europe and Asia on alternate years. The most renowned annual tournament for mini golf teams is the European Cup.  Other prestigious mini golf competitions are the US Masters, US Open, British Open and Irish Open.

Origins of Mini Golf

The oldest mini golf course in the world is an 18 hole course of putting greens known as The Himalayas. Founded in 1867 at St Andrews in Scotland, it is still operating and open to the public today.  In the early decades of mini golf hotels began to offer their guests the use of a miniature golf course.  Then in 1922 the first artificial greens began to be produced, and from that time on mini golf became accessible to increasing numbers of people.

The Joy of Mini Golf

Mini golf is a sport that allows just about anyone, or any group, team or family, to start playing immediately, regardless of age, experience, skills and abilities or other criteria.  Young school children play along with their parents and grandparents,  while a business office team can turn up who may rarely leave their desks. You don't need a handicap or an introduction, and you are here to have fun and to progress at your own pace.  There's no expensive equipment to buy and no long drive out to the country.  As most mini golf venues are under cover, the game is not cancelled due to the weather.  Rain, hail or summer heat will not affect your play.  Finally, mini golf fosters a sense of lighthearted fun and imaginative adventure, a great context for improving your skills and developing your game.
