How Important is Body Movement In The Golf Swing

I would like to bring everyone’s attention to how valuable a balanced and powerful body motion can be when trying to create a solid repeatable golf swing.

There are so many factors that have to be accounted for when making a golf swing but in my eyes a lot of these factors can be taken care of by having a strong balanced pivot. It's amazing to watch so many players who constantly are working hard on their games looking at the golf club, shaft and whatever else they maybe checking when they practise but with no care or attention to how the body is working throughout their swing.

When we look at other sports that are played with a ball like cricket, baseball, tennis, basket ball and the list goes on and on. We see there is a consistent pattern between all these sports and that pattern is the body. The body has a very important role in the success of the individual executing the shot in hand no matter which sport they are trying to play.

Let's have a look at 2 examples,

Cricket- the body has to be in position to be able to play the shot and this starts from the ground ie with the feet. If the feet are not in position then the ball which is usually coming at the batter at speed will not be able to be played with control or execution as the body will not be able to get in to the right position to play the shot. How often have you heard a commentator in cricket say oh his feet where not in position and that's why he was bowled or why he miss hit the shot and was caught.

Basket Ball- Now this is another great example of what the body has to do to have any chance of being successful when trying to make a basket. The body has the role of getting into a balanced position enabling the player to use the floor to leap before shooting the ball towards the basket.

When we look at Tour Professionals from around the world we see that they don't all have the same pivots but have subtle or major differences to how they employ their pivots when swinging the golf club. We have to take certain factors into account here though, like Build, flexibility, injury or swing style to mention a few. All these factors will play a massive part in how players are able to use their bodies to the best of their ability to enable them to control their golf swing.

Another huge factor is TALENT, what we have to remember is that these guys/girls are some of the most talented players in the game to the point where they can have unbalanced or average pivots but still have educated enough hands to be able to control their golf club to maintain control of the golf ball. There is one similarity which is common among all these good players and that is the transition from back swing to forward swing. They all start from the ground and work up, meaning that the lower body actually starts the golf clubs journey back down to the golf ball.

If every amateur could have this knowledge and implement it in their golf swing by improving their pivot and have the lower half start their down swing they would see a huge difference in their ability to create power, control and strike the ball with more consistency.

Have a look at these two videos to help you understand what we are trying to achieve in the back swing and with the transition into the down swing.

This has to be the golden question for all players in the wonderful game of golf.  This question alone is one which everybody would love not only to know the answer but also how to apply it consistently to their current games.

So I have added this blog to educate golfers and give all the struggling golfers in the world a fighting chance by educating them on this subject. In my mind there are 3 imperatives that have to adhered to when playing golf.

Imperatives

1) Flat Left Wrist

2) Club head Lag Pressure Point

3) Straight Plane Line.

Now to most of you reading this probably have no idea what I am talking about which is fine as this is the reason I have added this blog to help you all gain valuable information to help your golf game.

The Flat Left Wrist controls the clubface thus controlling the flight direction of the golf ball after impact. Most players I see have no idea the flat left wrist controls the club face and are trying to lift the ball off the ground destroying the number 1 imperative and any chance of achieving ball flight control.

The Club head Lag Pressure Point is essential as it controls and monitors the energy that is stored in the golf club. So many golfers are losing so much power as they do not understand how to load or store energy within their golf swings and then transport it correctly into impact.

A Straight Plane Line is the third Imperative but by no means the least of importance. Unfortunately players again have no idea about plane and how the golf club travels and relates to the plane throughout the golf swing. It is my desire and ambition to help educate golfers in this subject to give them a fighting chance to building a strong consistent golf game.

If you're reading this and currently struggling with your game I challenge you to come to Inner City Golf as we are highly educated Professionals who are very eager to help golfers develop their game. If you have questions regarding this subject or anything else to do with your golf game please do not hesitate to contact us as were here to help.

With the Fed Ex championships most exciting finale over there stood a player who had to come from the down the field to claim golfs biggest prize and emulate himself to being the best player for 2010.

Jim Furyk is one of the most consistent players of his generation and surely has the chance to become the No:1 ranked player in the almighty golf world rankings before long. Considering he is no where near the long hitters on tour once again shows that length does not guarantee success at the highest level. There is no doubt length off the tee helps players to go in with shorter irons but what Jim has is the amazing ability to consistently repeat his golf swing with devastating effect.

Thankfully Jim was taught by an educated professional his father who allowed him to develop his unique golf swing with only very minor adjustments helping with his consistency with impact alignments thus creating the player we all love to watch today. Not forgetting his amazing ability around the greens and his putting average speaks for itself.

A huge lesson has to be learned here for all aspiring players or coaches alike, it's not a pretty golf swing that wins but the most consistent swing that suits the individual should be the goal for any player. It's golf coaches responsibility to be astute and educated enough to develop players and their individual swings rather than teaching everybody the same swing.

Being a golf coach is a privilege and as coaches we owe it to our clients to have to knowledge and desire to help them develop there games and not just a good looking golf swing.
